Overview

Working with Yelo Architects we have developed four unique and expertly designed townhouses situated in the centre of Lewes.  Located just off the high street, these houses are built over historic chalk vaults, believed to have been built in 1723.  Completed in late 2018, Baobab sold two houses off plan, with the remaining two up for sale. The Area

History and Culture

These townhouses have been built on Lewes’s historic chalk-vaulted structure, believed to have been built in 1723.

The graffiti present dates back as far as 1723, and includes some done by a relative of Thomas Paine, founding father of the USA and author of the rights of man. It is likely to have served as a storage facility with a probable access hatch leading onto Brooman’s Lane to the south, for the delivery of goods – possibly wine and spirits.

Baobab has made every effort to preserve and incorporate the vaults where possible.

Lewes History

Restaurants/Gastropubs

Dining out in Lewes is a pleasure, from the gastronomic delights on offer at the Pelham House Hotel and Jolly Sportsman in nearby East Chiltington, to the wide range of gastro pubs, many of which support the resident Harvey’s Brewery. A tour of the brewery is a must!

Lewes is also home to the first ever ‘Bills’ restaurant which started as a green grocer and then cafe on Lewes High Street. There has been significant investment and construction within Lewes of late, whether it is the cinema and restaurant development at the station or the super exciting large redevelopment of the North Street Quarter.

Location

The historic County Town of East Sussex, Lewes is a vibrant and thriving market town nestled in the heart of the South Downs National Park, which enjoys a rich and distinctive architectural heritage.

Lewes is home to a wealth of creative industries and the passionate patronage of the arts can be felt through the character of its lanes and twittens, as you wander through the town.

The City of Brighton is only 8 miles away on south coast and there are also direct rail links to London Victoria, in a little over one hour. Lewes has a maverick population, which over the centuries has resulted in the town developing a truly unique place in history.

South Downs College is located in Lewes and offers both full and part time courses.
